Just heard this - Fidel Castro is dead! Not really a fan so good riddance but there is an interesting car scene in Cuba driven out of necessity. What cars would you look for there and bring back?

It’s not what they got that we did not but that they preserved many cars that went to the crusher here. Think 1950 - 1960 era vehicles. Forget the Soviet built crap - they can keep it.

I’d leave them all there, but send them all the parts they need. They’ve become as much a part of Cuba’s culture as the food and music to outsiders.

I have no interest in a 1959 Buick Limited with a Lada power plant and drivetrain.

Wrong country. If you want 50's Soviet vintage tanks, it’s North Korea you want

One to go until what? Cuba becomes like Haiti and the DR? Shit, I think Cuba still has better healthcare than Puerto Rico.

Until Raul dies and the family dictatorship can be over. Of course, his likely successor is an equally outdated hardliner, so it’s not like anything would really change.

I don’t know if “preserved” is a good term, a lot of these cars are modified beyond redemption if one wants a correct period piece. Cubans have made do with what was there before going into a dark age, and have done an admirable job out of necessity.
If anything, we should send them parts for the cars that have survived, in order to keep them on the road, as they are a part of life and culture now. We have enough 54 Chevy sedans here.

For a while they had some nice Soviet missiles you could probably buy, but freaking Kennedy just had to swoop in and take them away from the poor Cubans. He didn’t even think of the children!
